March 31,
2008 Fishing Report - South Holston
Midges are hatching in the morning hours.
There have been two blue wing hatches, one in the mid morning
and one in the afternoon/evening. The morning hatch has been a
smaller sized fly 20-22. When the hatch is heavy, larger browns
are letting down their guard. Good numbers of fish are being
caught on dry fly dropper rigs, with olive mayfly nymphs and
dries. Some nice fish have been caught on the dry fly. A good
dry fly for dropper rigs is a size 18 olive parachute.
The late evening midge hatch has been a size
28 or smaller bug. Fish are eating the emergers. Try black
thread flies and softly strip them through the eating fish.
However this hatch has been a tough one to fish so stick with
it. 7X flouro is usually needed.
