March 31, 2008 - Watauga Trophy Section
Theo and I guided a group of four on a
wade/float trip on the Watauga tailwater. We waded a ½ day in
the morning and floated 5 miles in the afternoon. Blonde caddis,
a few blue wings, and lots of midges were hatching all day. The
most prolific hatch came during dropping water around 4pm. We
were lucky to have extremely skilled anglers on this trip.
Between the four anglers we figured to have scratched over 200
fish. However, a beginning angler would have easily caught over
20 fish. One angler landed over 70 fish over the course of the
whole day. The best bite was on midge emergers, bluewing nymphs,
and olive streamers. We targeted shallow riffles that dropped
into deeper water. This type of water holds lots of bugs and is
a good place to catch high numbers of fish. Several rainbows
over 17 inches were caught and a couple over 20 inches. The
trick was to fish during rising and dropping water, by moving to
different sections of the tailwater. Now is a great time to fish
the Watauga, however, we are booking up quickly. Feel free to
call our fly shop to set up a trip, 828.963.5050.
